Barrage (Baraj) (translated)

Baraj is a 1977 Turkish drama film directed by Orhan Aksoy and written by Safa Önal. The story unfolds between Nazım, a foreman working at a remote dam construction site, and Aysel, a woman employed at an Istanbul brothel. The two begin exchanging letters through a newspaper's lonely-hearts column. Ashamed of his appearance, Nazım passes himself off as Orhan, a handsome young laborer at the site, and sends Aysel the worker's photograph instead of his own. Matters grow complicated when Aysel arrives at the construction site to meet her correspondent face to face. Although she is first attracted to Orhan, the man from the picture, she gradually comes to recognize Nazım's sincere and selfless devotion. Produced by Akün Film, the movie stars Türkân Şoray, Tarık Akan and Iranian actor Nasır Melek (Naser Malek Motiee). One of the well-known romantic dramas of the Yeşilçam era, it asks whether a relationship founded on deception can turn into true love.
