Türkân Şoray — Biography
Türkan Şoray (born 28 June 1945, Istanbul) is a legendary Turkish actress, screenwriter, director and writer, affectionately known as the "Sultan" of Turkish cinema. She began her screen career in 1960 and earned her first award at the 1964 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, where she was named most successful actress for Acı Hayat. Having appeared in more than 220 films, she holds the distinction of being the female performer with the most feature-film credits worldwide.
Together with Fatma Girik, Hülya Koçyiğit and Filiz Akın, she forms the celebrated quartet of leading ladies of the Yeşilçam era, and she is the only one among them who also pursued directing. She helmed Dönüş (1972), Azap (1973) and Bodrum Hâkimi (1976) on her own and co-directed Yılanı Öldürseler (1981) with Şerif Gören. She starred opposite Kadir İnanır in classics such as Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım, Dila Hanım and Kara Gözlüm. Named a State Artist in 1991, she became a UNICEF goodwill ambassador for Turkey on 12 March 2010. She announced her retirement from acting in 2018, and a primary school bears her name.
