The Genial Bandit (Sevimli Haydut)

Set in the troubled reign of Abdülmecit, the film follows Lieutenant Osman, who is expelled from the army and sent into exile. Rescued from certain death by his uncle Rıza, he joins a mountain band and soon becomes beloved by the villagers, who call him the "Genial Bandit" for returning money seized by raiding gangs and foiling their attacks. Had he not been dismissed, he would have married Emine, the Pasha's daughter, who now finds herself torn between her love for him and her family. Osman's bitter enemy is the ruthless outlaw Çulsuz, who also desires Emine and murders Zeynep Nine and the Pasha, later abducting Osman's sister Ayşe. When the two men fight to the death, Osman recognizes on Çulsuz's neck the twin of the pocket watch his dying uncle gave him: Çulsuz is Nasri, his own brother who was kidnapped as a child. Learning the truth, Çulsuz throws himself in front of the bullets to save his brother and dies asking that their secret be kept. Written and directed by Asaf Tengiz, the 1961 black-and-white adventure stars Ayhan Işık and Türkan Şoray.
