Ayhan Işık — Biography

Ayhan Işık was one of the first great stars of Yeşilçam and among the best-known leading men of Turkish cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. The public called him the "Taçsız Kral" (Uncrowned King), a nickname still attached to him decades after his death. He trained as a painter, and found his way into film through a magazine contest.

Born with the surname Işıyan, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, belonged to a group of young painters known as "The Ten", and worked for a time in Bab-ı Ali. After winning the contest run by the magazine Yıldız, he made his first film, Yavuz Sultan Selim ve Yeniçeri Hasan; his real breakthrough came with Lütfi Akad's Kanun Namına. With Akad he made the İngiliz Kemal films and Katil, and with Osman Seden Bir Avuç Toprak. When a 1959 attempt at Hollywood led nowhere, he returned to Turkey with Otobüs Yolcuları and Üç Tekerlekli Bisiklet. The Küçük Hanım series, made with Belgin Doruk, was hugely popular.

In the 1970s he appeared in films such as Cingöz Recai and Dağların Kartalı, directed Örgüt, and worked with Klaus Kinski on Italian productions. He died in Istanbul on 16 June 1979, aged 50, of a cerebral hemorrhage.
