Muammer Gözalan — Biography

Muammer Gözalan was one of the supporting actors of Turkish cinema who appeared in a very large number of films. On screen he was usually a man of courtrooms, surgeries and police stations: he appeared as a judge, prosecutor, doctor, police commissioner or chief of police. He is said to have appeared in more than three hundred films.

He came from a family in Eyüp. After his basic schooling he worked briefly at the Istanbul City Theatres and met the cinema in 1932. His screen work includes early titles such as Beni Mahvettiler (1951) and Bir Avuç Toprak (1957), in which he played the prosecutor. In the mid-1960s he played Muhtar Molva in Yakut Gözlü Kedi (1966). In his films of 1968-1973 he was a judge in Adını Anmayacağım (1971) and Şenlik Var, a doctor in Artık Sevmeyeceğim, a commissioner in Zulüm, a chief of police in Yılmayan Şeytan and the uncle in Dert Bende (1973). He played Tevfik in Fosforlu Cevriye and Asım in Uyanık Kardeşler. He played the defence lawyer in İtham Ediyorum, a judge in Günahsızlar and a taxi passenger in Şoför (1976). Hedef was among his last films.

Alongside acting he worked as a branch manager at the State Railways and retired in the 1960s. His wife, Ayşe Nigar, who used the stage name Hülya Gözalan, was a stage actress whose career ran from the Darülbedayi to the Istanbul City Theatres. He is buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.

Their work through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

A defence lawyer in İtham Ediyorum, a judge in Günahsızlar, a commissioner in Murtaza: Muammer Gözalan's screen is the police station and the courtroom. His commissioner in Murtaza, who hears a poor neighbourhood's complaint, sums up his place in Yeşilçam well: the man standing at the threshold where the heroes of the melodramas meet the state.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Muammer Gözalan's filmography passes through every shape Yeşilçam took: Muhsin Ertuğrul's Şehvet Kurbanı (1940), Ertem Eğilmez's comedy Yalancı Yarim, Guido Zurli's Italian-Turkish production Hedef. In my view his value lies not in one part but in his ability to enter the film of each era as the same dependable supporting actor.
