Cüneyt Arkın — Biography

Born Fahrettin Cüreklibatır in Eskişehir in 1937 and known by his stage name Cüneyt Arkın, he became one of the most prolific and beloved figures in Turkish cinema. A graduate of Istanbul's medical faculty who briefly practiced as a physician, he entered the film industry through a magazine talent contest in the mid-1960s and went on to appear in more than three hundred films and television series, while also writing, producing and directing.

In his early years he played romantic leads opposite Yeşilçam's celebrated actresses, including Türkan Şoray, Fatma Girik, Filiz Akın and Hülya Koçyiğit. He then reinvented himself as the invincible hero of historical adventures, portraying folk figures such as Malkoçoğlu, Kara Murat and Battal Gazi. Trained in riding and karate, he performed his own stunts and was repeatedly injured on set. In the late 1970s he collaborated with director Remzi Aydın Jöntürk on politically engaged films. His 1982 low-budget science-fiction adventure Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam later earned him international cult fame. He won the Golden Orange Best Actor award in 1969 and received the Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Award in 2021, a year before his death in Istanbul in June 2022.
