Turgut Özatay — Biography

Turgut Özatay was one of the most prolific actors of Yeşilçam and one of its most memorable screen villains. He is known as the third actor, after Erol Taş and Hulusi Kentmen, to appear in the most films in Turkish cinema, with a filmography approaching 500 productions. He is remembered above all as Impaler Voivode Vlad in the Kara Murat series and as the lemon-crazed Ayı Abbas in Korkusuz Korkak.

In his youth he took up athletics at school and, according to sources, competed at the 1952 Summer Olympics. In 1953 director Refik Kemal Arduman noticed him in a cinema and offered him acting work, which launched his film career; in his early years he mostly played romantic leads. In 1960 he shared the lead in Kırık Çanaklar, which was entered in the 11th Berlin International Film Festival. In the decades that followed he became mainly one of the leading villains in the films of Cüneyt Arkın and Kemal Sunal, playing Hasan Sabbah in Alpago, Denisos in Ölüm Görevi, Davut in Atla Gel Şaban, Arif Ağa in Keriz and Manyak Mahmut in Zehir Hafiye.

Özatay died in Istanbul on 26 June 2002 of lung cancer, aged 74, and was buried at Feriköy Cemetery after funeral prayers at the Teşvikiye Mosque. His family had moved to İzmir from Skopje before the Balkan Wars.
