Gırgır Ali

Gırgır Ali

Movie · 1982 · 16 people

Comedy, adventure and crime elements combine in Gırgır Ali, a 1982 Turkish film. Çetin İnanç directed it; the screenplay is by Cüneyt Arkın, who also leads the cast. Mehmet Karahafız produced for Anıt Film. It was shot in colour on 35 mm and runs 80 minutes.

The story revolves around the title character. Cüneyt Arkın plays Gırgır Ali and Emel Tümer plays Emel. Ali's ailing elderly uncle wants to leave him his estate, but Ali will not accept it. Around the same time an old friend, accused of murder, asks Ali for help, and events turn into a chase. Ali Şen plays the uncle, with Deniz Dümer as the uncle's wife and Baykal Kent as his henchman. Kâzım Kartal plays Kazım, Hikmet Taşdemir is Pelegrini, Necla Soylu plays Gırgır Ali's girlfriend, Tülay Karaca is Zeyno, Nejat Gürçen is the casino owner, Nihat Yiğit is Cordiano and Cevdet Arıkan is Kemal. Tevhid Bilge plays a gambler, Turgut Özatay a barman and Jale Efecik plays Jale; a large group of actors appear as the fedai.

Salih Dikişçi was the cinematographer and Necdet Tok the editor. In the dubbing credits, Abdurrahman Palay voices Cüneyt Arkın and Ayşin Atav voices Emel Tümer.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Cüneyt Arkın both wrote the script and plays the lead, throwing comedy, adventure and crime into the same pot. A friend accused of murder, bodyguards on his tail and events that turn into a chase: plenty of material if you want pace. But the story is pretty loose; the inheritance plot sits on one side, the gamblers and the nightclub world on the other, and the film never quite decides which to focus on. Fun for switching off.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Seeing Cüneyt Arkın as a joker of a hero called Gırgır Ali is, at first, a charming surprise. A man who turns down an inheritance and rushes to help a friend in trouble: the honest, loyal hero Yeşilçam loved is still in place here. Yet the warm storytelling I look for in the classics is almost wafer-thin in this film. Swinging between comedy and brawls, the narrative leaves the characters little room for a sincere moment. A pleasant curiosity for his fans; for me, more of a light period curiosity.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The title sounds like pure comedy, but the story has a murder accusation, gamblers, a nightclub and a chase with hired muscle. It may be a bit rough for small children. Grandparents will enjoy this lighter side of Cüneyt Arkın. With teenagers it works fine as an adventure film, with some laughs to share.
