Kara Murat: Fatih'in Fedaisi

Kara Murat: Fatih'in Fedaisi

Movie · 1972 · 8 people

A colour Turkish adventure and historical film, Kara Murat Fatih'in Fedaisi came out on 1 November 1972. Directed by Natuk Baytan for Erler Film, it marks the first screen appearance of Kara Murat, the hero played by Cüneyt Arkın, and opens the Kara Murat series.

The story is set in the years after the fall of Constantinople. Vlad of Wallachia, the tyrant later known as the Impaler, raids Turkish villages and lures Ottoman raiders into traps, taking most of them captive. Kara Murat's elder brother is among the prisoners. Sultan Mehmed's campaign brings Bucharest down, but Kara Murat's rage does not cool once his brother has been killed. Years later, with Vlad back on his throne and plotting, Kara Murat, now a formidable fighter, is sent to Bucharest on a secret errand: to find the missing envoys and seize the Hungarian-Wallachian military agreement. He poses as a traitorous raider named Cafer, but once his identity is discovered a death order is issued against him. Along the way he falls for Angela, played by Hale Soygazi.

Turgut Özatay plays Vlad III, Erol Taş plays Mihal and Atilla Ergün plays Nikol, with Bora Ayanoğlu as Sultan Mehmed. Natuk Baytan, Fuat Özlüer and Erdoğan Tünaş wrote the screenplay, Türker İnanoğlu produced and Çetin Gürtop shot the film.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Kara Murat Fatih'in Fedaisi is the film in which Cüneyt Arkın first brought Kara Murat to the screen, the birthplace of one of an era's best-loved heroes. All the innocent zest of seventies colour adventure films is here: a brave fighter carrying his brother's loss inside him, a hero slipping into enemy land in disguise, a love that crosses his path. Seeing familiar faces like Erol Taş and Turgut Özatay together is a pleasure of its own. To today's eye some scenes may look naive, with good and evil split by sharp lines; but that innocence is exactly why we loved these films.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Kara Murat's first film is a full adventure package on paper: a secret mission to Bucharest, missing envoys, a military agreement to seize, and a death order chasing the hero once his cover is blown. There's plenty to build tension with, and Cüneyt Arkın's energy drives it along. But if you're used to today's action standards, the fights may feel old-school; go in knowing that.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Kara Murat Fatih'in Fedaisi sets a fictional hero against a real historical backdrop: the years after the fall of Constantinople, Mehmed II's campaign in Wallachia, and Vlad, later known as the Impaler. History here is scenery; the aim is adventure, not a portrait of the period, so don't expect depth on the politics of Wallachia or Hungary. What is more interesting is how the film reflects the appetite for historical heroics in 1970s Turkey, and the fact that a whole Kara Murat series opened with it says as much. Less a history lesson than a record of its era's popular imagination.
