Hale Soygazi — Biography

Hale Soygazi was born on 21 September 1950 in Istanbul. After Saint Benoit French High School she graduated from Erenköy Girls' High School, then left her French philology studies at university in her second year to go to Switzerland, where she trained as a model; she worked as a fashion model after returning to Turkey. In 1972 she won the Turkish Cinema Beauty Contest run by the newspaper Saklambaç and was named Miss European Cinema in Italy, making her screen debut the same year in Kara Murat: Fatih'in Fedaisi.

She went on to appear in films such as Vurun Kahpeye, Bir Demet Menekşe, Süt Kardeşler and Bir Yudum Sevgi, winning Best Actress at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in 1978 for Maden and again in 1984 for Bir Yudum Sevgi; in Atıf Yılmaz's Kadının Adı Yok and Bekle Dedim Gölgeye she played educated, urban women who resist patriarchal norms. She made her stage debut in 2000 in Küçük Prens, and in 2004 received the same festival's lifetime achievement award.

She married actor Ahmet Özhan in 1976 and later divorced, then had a long relationship with director Barış Pirhasan, before marrying writer Murat Belge after roughly a decade together. In August 2026 she received the first Altın Erguvan Honor Award at the Çatalca Film Festival, remaining a name still very much part of the conversation around Yeşilçam.
