Macit Koper — Biography

Macit Koper has had a long career that runs from the theatre stage through cinema and television to screenwriting; his strongest mark on film is the role of Zebercet in Anayurt Oteli. He currently plays Hikmet in the series Kızılcık Şerbeti, and in August 2026 it was announced that he would receive the Orhan Kemal Labour Award of the Adana Golden Boll Film Festival together with Suna Selen and Aydın Sayman.

He took up theatre in high school at the Beşiktaş Halkevi and studied at the LCC Theatre School under Muhsin Ertuğrul, Beklan Algan and Ayla Algan. From 1969 to 1979 he worked at Dostlar Theatre as an actor, dramaturg and director. In the 1979/1980 season he moved to the City Theatres and, in Berlin, wrote and directed the play Giden, Tez Geri Dönmez for foreign workers; when his post was ended under the martial law act in 1980 he returned to Dostlar, and in 1989 he regained his City Theatres position by court decision. In film he began writing scripts with Seni Seviyorum (1983), at Atıf Yılmaz's encouragement, and after Rumuz Goncagül worked mainly with İrfan Tözüm and Ömer Kavur. As an actor he took leading roles in Aaahh Belinda and Melodram and appeared in films such as At and Hodja from Pjort; Akrebin Yolculuğu (1997) and İftarlık Gazoz (2016) are among his later work.

On television he played Lala Mustafa Pasha in Muhteşem Yüzyıl, Adil Topal in Poyraz Karayel and, in 2025, Yakup, one of the main characters of Eşref Rüya. His wife, the screenwriter Hülya Koper, died in March 2025; his son Gün Koper is also an actor.

Macit Koper's strongest vein in cinema is Ömer Kavur: Zebercet in Anayurt Oteli, Yavuz in Gece Yolculuğu, the Foundry Master in Akrebin Yolculuğu. He also worked on the writing side with Kavur, and he comes across as an actor who looks into Kavur's world from the inside. In my view Anayurt Oteli (1986) is the centre of that line: the film where his face stays in the mind most.
