A Season in Hakkari (Hakkâri'de Bir Mevsim)

Movie · 1983–1986 · 2 people

A Season in Hakkari is a 1983 drama film and the third feature by director Erden Kıral. The screenplay, written by Ferit Edgü and Onat Kutlar, is based on Edgü's novel of the same name, which grew out of his experiences as a soldier-teacher in the village of Pirkanis in Hakkâri in 1964. A Turkish-German co-production made by Kentel Film, the film features music by Timur Selçuk.

The story follows a young teacher (Genco Erkal) who, for political reasons, is exiled to a remote mountain village without roads or electricity, where he spends a harsh winter forging bonds with the villagers and their children. Genco Erkal and Şerif Sezer lead the cast. The film won the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI prize at the 33rd Berlin International Film Festival, yet it remained banned in Türkiye for five years.
