Şerif Sezer — Biography

Born on 12 December 1946 in Mudanya, Şerif Sezer studied at the Theatre Department of Ankara University's Faculty of Language, History and Geography before beginning her stage career with the State Theatres. Of Rumelian, Georgian and Laz descent, she made her film debut in Sinan Çetin's Bir Günün Hikâyesi (1980) and soon became known for her portrayals of Eastern and rural Turkish women.

She is best remembered for Yol (1982), directed by Yılmaz Güney and Şerif Gören and winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and for Erden Kıral's Hakkâri'de Bir Mevsim (1983), which won a Silver Bear in Germany. Sezer reached a much wider audience playing "Kader" in the 2002 television series Asmalı Konak, and went on to appear in films such as Mustafa Hakkında Herşey and Babam ve Oğlum, the latter earning her a Best Actress award.

Still active after more than four decades on screen, she returned to television in the 2025 series Çarpıntı, in a storyline where her character's younger years are played by her own daughter. In early 2026 she made headlines defending director Yılmaz Güney against criticism, and around the same time spoke publicly for the first time about a car accident she had survived.

Their work through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Şerif Sezer's career falls into two halves. In the 1980s she became the face of rural and Eastern women in hard, auteur-stamped films such as Yol and Hakkâri'de Bir Mevsim; in the 2000s she appears in Çağan Irmak's dramas aimed at a wide audience, such as Babam ve Oğlum. In my view the severity of the first half is less compromising than the emotional dramas of the second.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Şerif Sezer's name is tied to portraits of Eastern and rural women, and that portrait hardens in the poor eastern villages of Hakkâri'de Bir Mevsim and Kuzu. In my view it softens on television: the family melodrama of Asmalı Konak sits far from that village reality, and it is where Sezer reached a wide audience.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

For family viewing with Şerif Sezer, Babam ve Oğlum suits best: an emotional father-and-son drama for teenagers and adults. Mustafa Hakkında Herşey is an abduction-and-interrogation thriller, more for grown-ups. Hakkâri'de Bir Mevsim is a heavy film; do not pick it for children.
