Homeland Hotel (Anayurt Oteli) (translated)

Anayurt Oteli (Motherland Hotel) is a 1986 Turkish film directed and scripted by Ömer Kavur, based on the novel of the same name by Yusuf Atılgan. The story unfolds in an old, fourteen-room mansion-turned-hotel near a train station, where a mysterious woman arrives on a delayed train from Ankara and enters the life of the hotel's clerk and owner, Zebercet. After she stays one night and leaves, his hopeless wait for her return grows into an obsession that drags him toward a dark, tragic ending. Macit Koper plays Zebercet, joined by Orhan Çağman and Serra Yılmaz; filming took place in Nazilli and at the Ankara Palas Hotel. Regarded as one of the pioneering "character study" films that emerged in Turkish cinema after the 1980 coup shifted filmmakers away from overtly political storytelling, it was named the fourth-best Turkish film ever by the Association of Cinema Writers in a 2015 poll. A restored version of the film was rereleased in 2017.
