Kemal İnci — Biography

Kemal İnci was a Yeşilçam filmmaker who left his mark first behind the camera and then in front of it. Against the usual career path he moved from directing to acting, and he worked as a screenwriter, producer, assistant director and actor over more than half a century. He was the elder brother of the actor Bilâl İnci.

After finishing middle school he began working in tent and travelling theatres, and continued in cinema as a set worker. He was assistant director on Toros Canavarı in 1961 and Gurbet Kuşları in 1964, and between 1964 and 1967 he directed films including Günah Kızları, Güzeller Kumsalı, Başlık, Beleş Osman, Silaha Yeminliydim, Cesur Kardeşler and Ah Bu Kadınlar. He also wrote the scripts of Aman Dünya Ne Dar İmiş and Bitmeyen Kavga and produced Üsküdar İskelesi and Basık Ökçeciler.

In the following decades he appeared mainly as an actor. He took part in productions such as Züğürt Ağa (1985), starring Şener Şen, Eşkıya and İkinci Bahar, and was in the cast of Bizimkiler from its sixth to its fourteenth season. Kabadayı (2007), Kolpaçino (2009), Yahşi Cazibe and Düğün Dernek (2013) belong to his later work. He also wrote two books, Şarkımız Yalnızlar Rıhtımı (2012) and Yeşilçam Anıları (2016), and is described as a poet as well. He died in İzmir on 30 September 2018.

Their work through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

What is interesting about Kemal İnci's acting is that a man who came from directing was cast again and again in the films of the next generation: Arap Celal in Yavuz Turgul's Muhsin Bey, Mustafa in his Eşkıya, the tough in Ömer Kavur's Gizli Yüz. That directors of such different styles put him in their casts shows, in my view, how old Yeşilçam and the cinema after it passed the baton.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Kemal İnci's roles divide between figures of the state and figures with the say in the neighbourhood: the bank manager in Milyarder, the Bodrum prosecutor in Mavi Sürgün, the commissioner in Hicran Sokağı, while the tough in Gizli Yüz holds authority on the street side. That makes him the actor of those who pass judgement or bar the way, and in small scenes he recalls the tension between Turkey's institutions and its streets.
