Rutkay Aziz — Biography

Rutkay Aziz was born Ünal Aziz Rutkay in Istanbul on 16 May 1947 and has worked as a Turkish actor, theatre director and arts administrator. His interest in theatre began in high school, where he met Tarık Akan, and he trained at the LCC Theatre School under Muhsin Ertuğrul. His first stage experience came as Jean-Paul Marat in Peter Weiss's Marat/Sade. From 1971 he spent many years at Ankara Sanat Tiyatrosu as an actor, director and artistic director, making his directing debut in 1972 with İsmet Küntay's play 403. Kilometre. He entered cinema with Zülfü Livaneli's Yer Demir Gök Bakır (1987) and went on to appear in films such as Sis, Ada and Piano Piano Bacaksız. He portrayed Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Ziya Öztan's Kurtuluş series (1994) and its follow-up film Cumhuriyet (1998). On television he featured in popular series including Bizimkiler, Hayat Bilgisi, Avrupa Yakası and Yalan Dünya. Aziz serves as president of the Nâzım Hikmet Culture and Art Foundation. His daughter, Doğa Rutkay, is also an actress.

Their work through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Rutkay Aziz's weight in cinema lies in public figures and in tensions between generations at home. He plays Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Cumhuriyet and Ali Firat in Sis, a film about family bonds and the relations between generations in Istanbul, where he shares the lead. The founding story of the state and the strain inside the house meet in one actor, which in my view lets him look at both faces of the period at once.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Rutkay Aziz entered cinema with Zülfü Livaneli's Yer Demir Gök Bakır, and the awards he received for Sis suggest that stage-trained acting also works in front of a camera. His places in director-led films such as the Watchmaker in Ömer Kavur's Gizli Yüz and Kerim in Tunç Başaran's Piano Piano Bacaksız point, in my view, the same way: Aziz is a supporting actor who adds weight to a cast.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Cenap the poet in Bizimkiler, Bülent Onaran in Avrupa Yakası, Timur Alsancak in Yalan Dünya: Rutkay Aziz finds a place in the crowded casts of long-running sitcoms. In my view the format does not give him the weight he has in Sis or Cumhuriyet; in weekly comedy a character mostly stays a splash of colour.
