Fork in the Road (Yol Ayrımı)

Movie · 2017 · 17 people

In 2017 Yavuz Turgul wrote and directed the Turkish drama Yol Ayrımı (released internationally as Fork in the Road). Its lead is Şener Şen, Turgul's constant leading man: every Turgul film except Fahriye Abla (1984) stars him. The film opened on 10 November 2017 and drew about 519,000 viewers for a gross of roughly 6.7 million lira. It was made by TMC Film and distributed by UIP.

Şen plays Mazhar Kozanlı, a businessman who has given his whole life to expanding the textile empire inherited from his father, however ruthless the method. A traffic accident lets him grasp life anew and perhaps drop a heavy weight he has long carried unknowingly. The change is not easy: at the fork in his road his family stands in the way, and Mazhar must either pay for his choice or give up. Along the way he finds new friends and places and meets Nur's ship and its crew. The cast includes Mert Fırat (Barlas), Rutkay Aziz (Altan), Nihal Yalçın (Emine), Çiğdem Selışık (Firdevs) and Tilbe Saran as Nur.

Filming took place in Istanbul. Uğur İçbak shot it and Anjelika Akbar wrote the music. One critic compares watching the Turgul and Şen partnership to drinking a well-aged wine and rates the film four out of five.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

The partnership of Yavuz Turgul and Şener Şen is one of the most precious collaborations between masters in Turkish cinema. Turgul has cast Şen in the lead in all his films except Fahriye Abla; such a partnership gives a feeling of trust on screen. A hard businessman who gave his life to his work and has to face his past after an accident is a story with a moral centre. Judged by the measure of the old masters, with its two-and-a-half-hour running time it is an unhurried film that gives you time.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Mazhar Kozanlı is a businessman who does not shy from harsh methods to grow the textile empire inherited from his father; the film works through the old tension between capital, family inheritance and conscience via one man. His re-examination of his life after an accident is a familiar theme that makes us question the measure of success and happiness. The family standing in his way also reminds us that an inheritance is not only money but expectation and duty. As long as the story does not slide into lecturing, it can serve as a social mirror.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

The subject is heavy: a businessman, an accident, a crossroads. The conflict here is not fists or chases but conscience and family. For viewers who want pace, a slow drama can be a test. If an actor like Şener Şen can carry a scene alone, it is bearable; those who do not like slow drama should watch the first half hour and then decide.
