Sad Folk Song (Acı Türkü) (translated)

Acı Türkü (“Bitter Folk Song”) is a black-and-white Turkish film shot in 1967 under the direction of Abdurrahman Palay. The screenplay came from Safa Önal, one of the most prolific writers of the Yeşilçam era, with Berker İnanoğlu producing for the Er Film company; sources classify it as a drama with a strongly sentimental register.

The cast is headed by Nuri Sesigüzel as Ahmet and Figen Say as Leyla, while Turgut Özatay, who also has a page on this site, plays the character Enver. Gülgün Erdem, İclal Genç and Devlet Devrim appear in supporting parts. In keeping with common practice of the period, the film relied on post-dubbing — director Abdurrahman Palay himself provided the voice for Özatay's role.

Running 94 minutes, with cinematography by Nejat Okçugil and editing by İsak Dilmen, the picture stands as one of the many productions of Turkish popular cinema's high-output 1960s.
