Movie · 1979 · 10 people

Süpermenler is a 1979 adventure, science-fiction and comedy film, made as a Turkish-Italian co-production by Erler Film and directed by Italo Martinenghi. It is the fifth of seven films in the Three Supermen series. In Italy it is known as 3 Supermen contro il padrino (3 Supermen Against the Godfather).

The action is set in Istanbul. A famous German scientist picks the city to test his time machine, and on the trial trip he travels to the last years of Byzantium and learns where its treasure is hidden. Once the news spreads, everyone wants the machine. Two superheroes, Atak and Matrak, try to seize it first, but the mafia kidnaps both the machine and the scientist. Detective Murat joins forces with the heroes to get hold of the device, and an explosion in the machine leaves the professor without his memory. Cüneyt Arkın plays Murat, Sal Borgese is Matrak, Ali Şen the professor, Güngör Bayrak is Kıy Agata and Aldo Sambrell plays the godfather. Turgut Özatay and Neriman Köksal also appear.

The script is credited to Toni Corti, Fuat Özlüer and Erdoğan Tünaş. Türker İnanoğlu and Italo Martinenghi produced it, and Çetin Gürtop and Aldo Ricci shot it. Turkish voice artists dubbed the foreign actors; Timuçin Caymaz and Fuat İşhan voice Sal Borgese.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A time machine, the mafia, superheroes and Cüneyt Arkın in one film: on paper it is exactly my thing. Events in Istanbul tie into each other quickly and the race to grab the machine never lets up. By today's eyes, though, the effects are pretty naive, so don't expect real tension. The comedy side also keeps getting in front of the action. Go in knowing that, put it on with friends for a laugh, and it is good fun.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

The strange, daring air of the late-seventies Turkish-Italian co-productions is on full display in Süpermenler. Travelling back to the last years of Byzantium in a time machine to trace a hidden treasure is, at heart, a charming fairy-tale idea. Ali Şen's professor and familiar faces such as Neriman Köksal and Turgut Özatay bring back the warmth of the old days. Past a certain point, however, the story comes apart, and the humour leans too often on noise. Anyone looking for the Yeşilçam films that tug at the heart will find more of a curiosity here, though fans of the series will enjoy it.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Superheroes, a time machine and jokes may well appeal to children. There are adventure scenes, but overall the film keeps a comic mood. The mafia and kidnapping plot may confuse little ones a bit, so stay close. Grandparents will be glad to see the old familiar faces. It works as light weekend fun for the whole family. Just don't expect too much from it.
