Coup (Darbe) (translated)
Adventure, drama, political themes, action and melodrama meet in a single story in Darbe, a 1976 Turkish film. It was directed by Şerif Gören from a screenplay by Erdoğan Tünaş, produced by Gülşah Film with Selim Soydan as producer and Çetin Tunca behind the camera. The film runs 86 minutes, and Cüneyt Arkın and Fikret Hakan share the leading roles.
At its centre is Ahmet, nicknamed "Baba," an accounting clerk played by Cüneyt Arkın. His old army friend Kemal, now a businessman, is played by Fikret Hakan. Ahmet's son Ali works at the same factory and belongs to the union, and the factory manager presses Ahmet to talk his son into leaving it. When a strike breaks out at the plant, Ali is killed. Shattered, Ahmet turns to Kemal for help in finding the killer. As the two men pursue the truth together, each begins to question his own life and choices.
The film sets a murder investigation against the social tensions of its time: factory life, union organising, a strike and injustice. Its listed themes also include the mafia, pool, brawls and a revolutionary youth. The supporting cast includes Aysun Güven, Ahmet Sezerel as Ali, Mahmut Cevher, Memduh Ün and Seyhan Karabay.
