Revenge Is Mine (İntikam Benim)

Revenge Is Mine (İntikam Benim) (translated)

Movie · 1983 · 4 people

In 1983 Çetin İnanç directed the Turkish action-adventure film İntikam Benim ("Revenge Is Mine"). Shot in colour on 35 mm, it tells of a police officer trying to make his brother's killers answer for what they did. İnanç wrote the screenplay with Cüneyt Arkın, who also produced and stars in it; the production company was 1. Ticaretim.

The hero, Kartal Murat, is one of the police force's most capable commissioners. After his brother's death he cannot pull himself together, turns to drink and eventually drops out of sight. Years later his former superior finds him, and an old friend on his deathbed tells him that his brother is in fact alive. The news brings him back to life, yet everyone linked to his brother is being killed one by one. Murat sets out to find who is behind it and to reach his brother.

Cüneyt Arkın plays Kartal Murat. Emel Tümer appears as a model and Hüseyin Peyda as the police chief, with Arzu Aytun (Oya), Oktar Durukan (Nail), Feryal Feray and Nejat Gürçen also in the cast. Sedat Ülker was the cinematographer, Necdet Tok the editor and Ahmet Gürkonak the production manager; Kemal Özkan plays a doctor; Arkın was dubbed in this film by Abdurrahman Palay.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A commissioner hunting his brother's killers, a hero climbing back up from the bottle, and everyone linked to his brother being killed one by one: İntikam Benim has every basic ingredient of a revenge film. Cüneyt Arkın's Kartal Murat is a full-blown eighties action hero. The news that his brother is alive kicks the story into high gear, and the mystery keeps the pace lively.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Written by Çetin İnanç together with Cüneyt Arkın, who also produced it, İntikam Benim is interesting as a genre piece shaped by its own star. The plot built around the missing-brother mystery is simple but functional, while the hero's arc from collapse to revival is an all too familiar template. That Arkın was dubbed here by Abdurrahman Palay is worth keeping in mind when judging the performance. The real problem is how heavily the script leans on formula: the supporting characters never rise above their function, and the chain of revenge says nothing new. Of period interest to genre fans, but modest in its cinematic language.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

For anyone raised on Yeşilçam, the name Cüneyt Arkın is an association in itself. In İntikam Benim he plays a man shattered by grief for his brother, then lifted again by hope. Brotherly love and loyalty form the moral centre of the story, and that side still moves me. My heart, though, belongs to films that rest more on feeling and character; here revenge and the string of deaths crowd out the warmth.
