Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Seeing Cüneyt Arkın and Hülya Koçyiğit in the same frame is an invitation in itself for anyone who loves Yeşilçam. Severek Ayrılalım tells of a woman's impossible love for her sister's husband, in the sorrowful melodrama tradition of those years. Orhan Gencebay's music gives the film a feeling all its own; for an ear raised on the songs of that era, it is the film's most lasting part. Its forbidden-love theme may trouble some viewers, but the film handles it with sorrow rather than cheap thrills.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Severek Ayrılalım is an emotional drama for fans of old Yeşilçam films. But its subject is a woman falling for her sister's husband, a forbidden love story. That makes it a poor fit for small children, and hard to explain to them. Grandparents will happily watch it for Cüneyt Arkın, Hülya Koçyiğit and Orhan Gencebay's music. Better suited to adults and older teens.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Shot in colour and Cinemascope, Orhan Aksoy's film shows the technical ambition of early-1970s Yeşilçam. İlhan Arakon's camerawork handles the wide format with ease, and Orhan Gencebay's music is the strongest element in setting the melodrama's emotional tone. Cüneyt Arkın and Hülya Koçyiğit's star power carries the film, but since both are dubbed, as was usual at the time, part of their performances is left in other hands. The real weakness is the script: the forbidden-love theme follows set melodramatic rules and stops at all the expected stations. The sorrow is well built but never surprising. Still worth watching as a typical star melodrama of its day.
