Movie · 1976 · 7 people

Adventure, drama and historical epic mix in Korkusuz Cengaver (Fearless Warrior), a Turkish film from 1976. Uğur Film made it, Memduh Ün produced it, and it runs eighty-eight minutes. Duygu Sağıroğlu wrote and directed it, and Cüneyt Arkın leads the cast. The story unfolds in the shadow of Byzantium, war, pirates and sorcery, and at its core is the struggle of a father brought down by a false accusation.

Şahin Bey is slandered by Anton and Anton's sibling, comes close to death, and survives. Hiding his identity as Kara Hilal, he starts to make trouble for Anton's men. Meanwhile he meets Sencer, the son he has not seen for years, played by Salih Kırmızı. The young man believes the rumours about his father and is hostile to Kara Hilal. Tarık Şimşek plays Anton; the cast also includes Mine Sun, Reha Yurdakul, Giray Alpan, Alan Steel and Yadigar Ejder. Trying to rescue his son, Şahin Bey is captured and loses his sight; he does not give in, and teaches himself to shoot arrows by the direction of sound.

The cinematographer is Muzaffer Turan and the score is by Erkin Koray. The film is in colour, later recoloured by Yeni Stüdyo. In the Turkish version Cüneyt Arkın is dubbed by Abdurrahman Palay.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Korkusuz Cengaver is a Cüneyt Arkın historical adventure in which emotion weighs heavily. The meeting between Şahin Bey, hiding his identity as Kara Hilal, and his son Sencer, who bears hatred toward his father, carries the father-son drama that Yeşilçam knew so well. A hero who refuses to give up even after losing his sight reflects the moral strength of the cinema of that era. Erkin Koray's score adds a surprising colour for its time. The sorcery and pirate elements sometimes scatter the story, but this is a film with its heart in the right place.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This film tells the story of a father and son, and that side of it is lovely. But it has harsh moments such as war, captivity and the hero losing his sight. So it may be too heavy for young children. Older fans of Cüneyt Arkın films will enjoy it, and teenagers may enjoy the adventure part. It's better to watch it with children over ten.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Byzantium, pirates, sorcery and a slandered hero: in Korkusuz Cengaver's 88 minutes, the adventure dose rarely runs low. Şahin Bey, who makes life hell for his enemies as Kara Hilal, learning to shoot arrows by sound after going blind is a pure genre-movie idea. But fights shot with the means of the time look pretty clunky today, and the dubbing is distracting at times. Fun, but you have to watch it with its era in mind.
