Purgatory (Araf) (translated)

Araf is a 2006 Turkish horror film written and directed by Biray Dalkıran. Its central character, Eda, is a university student who becomes pregnant through a forbidden affair while attending dance school. Convinced that abortion is her only option, she goes through with the procedure; although her body recovers quickly, the trauma continues to haunt her for years. Having eventually managed to build a new life, Eda starts suffering from increasingly frequent nightmares. When those nightmares begin spilling over into her waking reality, she realizes that the daughter she aborted years earlier has returned from purgatory to take revenge on her. Made at a time when horror production in Turkish cinema was on the rise, the film drew more than 126,000 viewers in Turkish theaters. Akasya Asıltürkmen and Murat Yıldırım star in the leading roles.
