Cites

TV Series · 2015–2024 · 15 people

Pau Freixas created Cites (Catalan for "dates"), a Catalan-language television series shown on TV3. It mixes romantic comedy with drama in the first dates of couples who met online. Adapted from Bryan Elsley's 2013 British series Dates, it differs from the original in that its episodes run 45 minutes and each one covers two separate dates; apart from three episodes, the scripts are original. Four seasons of 38 episodes aired from 2015 to 2024.

The first episode aired on April 27, 2015 with a 13.5% share and 425,000 viewers, with episode 12 the season's best at 15%. The second season began on May 2, 2016 with a 9.6% share and 296,000 viewers, and its double-episode finale reached a 12.4% share. Citas Barcelona, a six-episode third season co-produced by Prime Video and TV3, arrived in June 2023 with Freixas again producing and directing. A fourth season was confirmed on March 18, 2024; the series ended that year.

Its directors include Pau Freixas, Marta Pahissa and Patricia Font, and it was produced by Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals and Arca Audiovisual. Up to 24 actors play the daters, among them Eduardo Noriega, Enric Auquer, Paula Malia, Aida Folch, Ingrid Rubio, Eva Santolaria, Francesc Garrido and Biel Durán.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Cites' format is both a blessing and an obstacle for a series fan. Since each episode tells two separate first dates, you never commit to a long character arc; a story opens and closes in 45 minutes. That makes it ideal to slot in between other things. On the other hand, the bond you get from following someone across seasons is missing here: a couple you like usually never comes back. And because the format barely changes over four seasons, a sense of repetition can creep in after the second. The drop in ratings after the strong first-season opening points the same way.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

When adapting a British format, lengthening the episodes and fitting two dates into each one is a clever structural choice. Cutting the two stories side by side feels like watching two versions of the same evening, and the contrast creates meaning on its own. With all but three scripts original, the adaptation clearly goes beyond copying. Because the format rests largely on dialogue and acting, everything depends on how the pairs are cast; across an ensemble of up to 24, some dates spark while others stay flat. It never fully escapes the clichés of romantic comedy, but as a small-scale chamber drama, it is worth noticing.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Cites works like a mirror of a time when meeting online became ordinary. Its run from 2015 to 2024 covers the years when relationships formed through apps stopped being a novelty and became part of everyday life. The series uses the first date as a small stage: how people present themselves, what they hide and how they adjust their expectations all come out there. Being made in Catalan also gives it a local identity. Still, by stopping at the first date, the series largely leaves out what comes after, which is the hard part of any relationship.
