John the Bastard

John the Bastard is a 1967 Italian Spaghetti Western that marked the directorial debut of Armando Crispino, who also wrote the script himself. John Richardson takes the lead role, with Gordon Mitchell and Claudia Gravy featured among the supporting cast.

What sets the picture apart from typical genre entries of the era is its source material: rather than an original gunslinger tale, the story reworks the plot of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni into a Western setting, casting its central figure as a ruthless, womanizing outlaw in the mold of the opera's title character. Running about one hundred five minutes, the film never received a theatrical release in German-speaking territories, unlike many other Italian Westerns of the period that found wide distribution across Europe. Beyond its unusual operatic roots, the production followed the established conventions of the Spaghetti Western cycle popular in Italian cinema during the late 1960s.
