Pirate of the Half Moon

Movie · 1957 · 2 people

Pirate of the Half Moon, originally released in Italian as Il corsaro della mezzaluna, is a 1957 adventure picture from Italy. Giuseppe Maria Scotese directed the film, with American actor John Derek in the leading role. The production belongs to the wave of swashbuckling costume adventures that Italian studios turned out during that era, built around pirate themes and seafaring action. The supporting ensemble includes Gianna Maria Canale, Alberto Farnese, Ignazio Leone, and Gianni Rizzo, among others. The screenplay was written by Mario Amendola, Scotese himself, and Riccardo Pazzaglia. Running roughly ninety-five minutes, the picture reached international audiences under its English title and was distributed in French-speaking markets as La Belle et le Corsaire. Contemporary critical response was unenthusiastic, with at least one later assessment dismissing it as a mediocre effort. Despite the lukewarm reception, it remains a representative example of the mid-fifties Italian adventure genre.
