The Last of the Vikings

The Last of the Vikings is a 1961 French-Italian historical adventure film directed by Giacomo Gentilomo, with Cameron Mitchell, Edmund Purdom and Isabelle Corey in the leading roles. Set in the Viking age, it follows a Viking prince inspired by the Norwegian king Harald Sigurdsson: after ten years away, he returns to his homeland only to find that a usurper has seized power in his absence, and he sets out to reclaim what is rightfully his.

Made on a relatively modest budget, the picture borrows the style of the sword-and-sandal epics popular at the time, while shifting the action from the Mediterranean to northern Europe. During production Mario Bava reportedly stepped in briefly for Gentilomo, though he remained uncredited. The sets were designed by Italian art director Italo Tomassi.
