Yılmaz Atadeniz — Biography

Yılmaz Atadeniz was a director, screenwriter and producer known for adapting Hollywood science-fiction, spy and western films to Turkish cinema in his own way. He did this at a time when Turkey lacked the equipment and technology to make them. Kilink İstanbul'da, Çirkin Kral and Yılmayan Şeytan are among the films of this line. He directed close to eighty films between 1963 and 1997 and died in Istanbul in 2023, aged 91.

He entered cinema in 1951, after finishing Kabataş Erkek Lisesi, at the urging of his brother Orhan Atadeniz. As an editor and assistant director he worked with Faruk Kenç, Atıf Yılmaz, Nejat Saydam and Sırrı Gültekin. His first feature, Yedi Kocalı Hürmüz, came out in 1963. In later decades his work extended to television, where he directed the series Solan Gül and Akşam Güneşi, and in 2015 he returned to directing with İkimize Bir Dünya.

He was active in professional bodies too: he founded Sine-Sen and chaired it for two terms, sat on the board of the Film Producers Association from 1988, and was elected head of SE-SAM in 2007. He chaired the juries of the 1989 Ankara Film Festival and the 1992 Golden Boll festival, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Antalya Golden Orange in 2008.
