Yılmaz Atadeniz — Biography

Born Ragıp Yılmaz Atadeniz on 1 February 1932 in Istanbul, the filmmaker entered the industry in 1951, after finishing Kabataş Erkek Lisesi, at the urging of his older brother Orhan Atadeniz. Working as an editor and assistant director alongside Yeşilçam figures such as Faruk Kenç, Atıf Yılmaz, Nejat Saydam and Sırrı Gültekin, he made his directing debut in 1963 with Yedi Kocalı Hürmüz and went on to direct nearly eighty films through 1997, becoming known for adapting Hollywood-style science-fiction and westerns to Turkish cinema with the era's limited resources. Also active in professional organizing, he co-founded the Sine-Sen (Sine-Kamder) union and served two terms as its chairman, sat on the board of the Turkish Film Producers' Association from 1988, chaired the juries of the Ankara and Golden Boll film festivals in 1989 and 1992, and led Turkey's Cinema Work Owners' Professional Union (SE-SAM) from 2007 until his death. He received honorary awards at the Golden Orange festival in 2008 and from Konya Selçuk University in 2012, and died of Covid-19 in Sarıyer on 13 December 2023, being buried the following day at Aşiyan Asri Cemetery.
