Georges Wilson — Biography
Born on 16 October 1921 in Champigny-sur-Marne, the illegitimate son of a French father and an Irish mother, he took the surname Wilson, drawn from his Irish grandmother, as his stage name, and his actual birth name was never disclosed. Succeeding Jean Vilar, he led the Théâtre National Populaire (later renamed the Théâtre national de Chaillot) from 1963 to 1972. Over a screen career spanning five decades he appeared in more than forty films, including Le Rouge et le Noir, Les Hussards, Dialogue with the Carmelites and the Tintin adaptation Tenten ve Altın Post, in which he played Captain Haddock; his film work brought him both a BAFTA and a César nomination. He was made a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and received a Molière Award. Father of the actor Lambert Wilson and the jazz musician Jean-Marie Wilson, he died in Rambouillet on 3 February 2010, at 88, of undisclosed causes.
