Nathalie Baye — Biography

Nathalie Marie Andrée Baye was born on 6 July 1948 in Mainneville to two painters; at fourteen she joined a dance school in Monaco, then trained at the Cours Simon and the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique, graduating in 1972. She made her screen debut in Robert Wise's Two People and, the same year, drew notice as the script girl in François Truffaut's Day for Night; over the years she also worked with Godard, Chabrol, Spielberg and other major directors. Of ten César nominations she won four, becoming the only actress to take the award three years running, for Every Man for Himself (1980), Strange Affair (1981), La Balance (1982) and The Young Lieutenant (2005); she likewise took best-actress prizes at the Venice and San Sebastián festivals, and in 2009 France named her a knight of the Legion of Honour. Her four-year relationship with singer Johnny Hallyday produced a daughter, actress Laura Smet, born in 1983. At 77, she died in Paris in April 2026 after struggling with Lewy body dementia, and was laid to rest quietly at Montparnasse Cemetery.
