André Valardy — Biography
Born André Knoblauch on 17 May 1938 in Borgerhout, near Antwerp, André Valardy trained as an actor at the Cours Simon in Paris. A Belgian comedian, actor and director, he became known above all for the extraordinary flexibility of his facial muscles, which let him switch between wildly different expressions in an instant — a trait that earned him the nicknames 'rubber man' and 'chameleon man' in the French press.
Valardy spent most of his career in French cinema, working steadily from the 1960s through the 1990s. Early roles in 'Bang-Bang' (1967) and 'L'emmerdeur' (1973) were followed by two of his best-remembered films: 'Bobby Deerfield' (1977) opposite Al Pacino, and 'La Chèvre' (1981) alongside Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard. 'Lévy et Goliath' (1987) and 'En toute innocence' (1988) rounded out this period.
He appeared in the 1998 film 'Que la lumière soit' late in his career. Valardy died on 30 April 2007 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.
