Robert Dalban — Biography
Robert Dalban — born Gaston Paul Aimé Robert Barré in Celles-sur-Belle on 19 July 1903 — was among the most instantly recognisable character actors of French cinema. Starting out in the theatre, he moved into film by the mid-1930s and, over roughly fifty years, built a catalogue of more than two hundred screen credits, also working in television and lending his voice to dub American stars into French. He was regularly cast as a taxi driver, a butcher, or a police officer, and appeared opposite the biggest names of the era, including Bernard Blier, Lino Ventura, Louis de Funès, Alain Delon and Jean Gabin. Notable parts include a newspaper editor across the Fantômas films, the policeman Gouvion in Le Pacha, and a technician in La Chèvre, alongside appearances in the Seventh Company comedies and the La Boum films. He married actress Madeleine Robinson, and passed away in Paris on 3 April 1987.
