Robert Dalban — Biography

Robert Dalban was one of the most familiar supporting actors in French cinema. Born Gaston Paul Aimé Robert Barré, he appeared in more than two hundred films over more than fifty years, and also worked on the stage, on television and as a French dubbing voice for American stars. On screen he mostly played everyday types such as police inspectors, taxi drivers and butchers, and he was a constant presence next to the big names of French cinema.

After stage experience he turned to film in the mid-1930s. In the 1950s he moved between crime pictures and comedy, playing the inspector in Give Me My Chance and in Be Beautiful But Shut Up, and Inspector Béchoux in Signé Arsène Lupin. In the 1960s he appeared as the newspaper director in the Fantômas trilogy and as Inspector Gouvion in Le Pacha. In the 1970s he acted in crime films such as Cops Is Cops, in military comedies such as The Seventh Company Has Been Found, and as the accountant Lartigue in Le téléphone rose. In his last years he played a technician in La Chèvre and he also appeared in the La Boum films.

Over his career he shared the screen with Jean Gabin, Louis Jouvet, Alain Delon, Lino Ventura, Bernard Blier, Paul Meurisse, Jean Marais and Louis de Funès, and, late in his career, with Sophie Marceau. He died in Paris on 3 April 1987.
