Selçuk Yöntem — Biography

Akif Selçuk Yöntem was born on 13 July 1953 in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul, the fourth of five children to a mother from Erzurum and a father from Sakarya; his father's army postings moved the family through Malatya, Ankara and Afyon during his childhood. Following Şişli Terakki High School, he took his theatre degree at the Ankara State Conservatory in 1976 and entered the Ankara State Theatre company a year later.

Stage awards followed for Dört Mevsim, Peynirli Yumurta and Deli Dumrul, and he won a Praiseworthy Director prize for staging Gürültülü Patırtılı Bir Hikâye; he also performed in TRT Istanbul's radio plays. Atlı Karınca brought him to television in 1978, and across some thirty later films and series he became best known as Aslan Akbey in Kurtlar Vadisi and Adnan Ziyagil in Aşk-ı Memnu, while C Blok and Devrim Arabaları earned him SİYAD and Sadri Alışık acting honours.

Beyond 400 episodes of the quiz show Büyük Risk, he stepped in to host Kim Milyoner Olmak İster? in 2014 after presenter Kenan Işık's stroke, continuing until 2017 before moving to Milyonluk Resim. A 2020 honorary prize came from the Frankfurt Turkish Film Festival, and lately he has been on stage in the musical Don Quixote and the play Amadeus.

Their work through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Aslan Akbey in Kurtlar Vadisi gives Selçuk Yöntem the familiar mould of the superior who issues orders. In my view the part that sets him apart is the Muhtar in Ümit Ünal's Gölgesizler: an authority who interrogates the whole village over a vanished girl, then leaves to find help and never returns. In that film the figure loses his weight, and Yöntem gets to try a tone the series never asked of him.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Aslan Akbey, the intelligence chief in Kurtlar Vadisi, the village Muhtar in Gölgesizler, Adnan Ziyagil, the older, wealthy husband of the Bosphorus mansion in Aşk-ı Memnu: Selçuk Yöntem's most visible parts keep putting him at the head of an order. Together they show the authority figure in three settings: the secret service, the village, the mansion. In my view that common thread makes his work readable socially, though it also narrows his range of roles.
