Sibel Alaş — Biography
Sibel Alaş is a pop singer and songwriter who rose in the mid-1990s with the song "Adam" and later made a name for herself as a book translator. She never left music entirely: in 2023 she recorded "Adam" again 28 years after its first release, and she returns from time to time with new singles.
She was studying American Culture and Literature at Istanbul University when, in her second year, she began working as Yonca Evcimik's vocalist and so entered the music scene. On an offer from Sony Müzik, her first album, Adam, produced by Mustafa Sandal, came out in 1995. The title track's breakthrough brought her the best newcomer female singer award at the 2nd Kral TV Video Music Awards, and its video, directed by Abdullah Oğuz, won the video of the year award. Fem followed in December 1996 and Çocuk in March 1998, all three on Sony Müzik. Her fourth album, Carpe Diem, was released in April 2006 on the İrem Records label, and the same year a compilation appeared in Sony BMG's Koleksiyon series.
From the late 2000s she turned to translation. In 2008 she translated Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet into Turkish and then George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire. In 2012 she re-recorded "Fem" for Volga Tamöz's album Tam 90'dan, and in 2014 she released the single "Herkes Gibisin".
