Belgica
Belgica, a Belgian-French drama from 2016, was directed by Felix van Groeningen. The 127-minute Dutch-language film draws on a true story about friends running a bar where rock bands play. Van Groeningen wrote the screenplay with Arne Sierens, and Menuet produced it. It opened in Belgium and France on 2 March 2016 and has since become a cult favourite.
Jo, in his late twenties, returns to the city he left to make art and opens a bar called Belgica, hoping to build a place where everyone can enjoy themselves freely. His married older brother Frank, at his wife's wish, has bought a dog-breeding farm outside the city, yet feels he has lost his purpose. Jo and the bar give him new energy; the brothers make Belgica more modern and lively, and within weeks it is the city's nightlife centre. But they will get carried away by the speed of it all.
Tom Vermeir and Stef Aerts lead the cast, with Charlotte Vandermeersch, Johan Heldenbergh and Sam Louwyck also appearing. Soulwax made the whole soundtrack. Belgica premiered at Sundance on 21 January 2016 and won the directing award in the festival's dramatic section. His earlier film The Broken Circle Breakdown was an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
