Directed by Uli Edel, this 2008 historical thriller adapts Stefan Aust's 1985 bestselling non-fiction book of the same name. It traces the rise and fall of the Red Army Faction (RAF), the far-left militant group that operated in West Germany from 1967 through the violent 'German Autumn' of 1977. Led by Andreas Baader (Moritz Bleibtreu), Ulrike Meinhof (Martina Gedeck) and Gudrun Ensslin (Johanna Wokalek), the group wages an urban guerrilla campaign of bombings, robberies and kidnappings against the state, while police chief Horst Herold (Bruno Ganz) pursues them. Written and produced by Bernd Eichinger, the production ranks among the most expensive German-language films ever made and drew around two and a half million cinema-goers in Germany. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st Academy Awards, and received matching nominations at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs. Its portrayal of real historical figures stirred public controversy and even prompted lawsuits, and critics remained divided over whether it presented the RAF soberly or mythologized its members.
