Future Lasts Forever (Gelecek Uzun Sürer)

Future Lasts Forever is a 2011 drama film written and directed by Özcan Alper, a co-production between Turkey, France and Germany made with EURIMAGES support. It premiered in competition at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2011 and opened in Turkey on 11 November 2011, winning five prizes at the 18th Adana Golden Boll Film Festival. It is the second feature by Alper, who had drawn acclaim with his debut Sonbahar.

The story follows Sumru, a university music researcher who travels from Istanbul to Diyarbakır for her thesis on traditional laments. Along the way she meets Ahmet, a street vendor selling pirated DVDs, and Uncle Antranik, caretaker of an abandoned church; as she traces the stories behind the laments, she is forced to confront a grief she has long suppressed. Told through Turkish, Kurdish and Armenian dialogue, the film stars Gaye Gürsel, Osman Karakoç and Durukan Ordu.
