Gridlocked

Gridlocked

Movie · 2015 · 8 people

A 2015 Canadian action thriller, Gridlocked shuts two mismatched men inside a police station and drops them into an armed siege, combining the buddy-cop formula with a survival story set in one building. Allan Ungar directed, and he co-wrote the screenplay with Rob Robol. The film reached a worldwide audience after Netflix bought it.

The story is set in New York. David Hendrix (Dominic Purcell), a former SWAT leader injured during an operation, has been given only routine assignments on the police force and struggles to accept it. Under a justice diversion programme, he is put in charge of Brody Walker (Cody Hackman), an arrogant movie star who has to spend time at the station to prepare for a role. While the two tour the police training facility, mercenaries storm it to get at items in the evidence room. Hendrix and Walker, who do not get along, must work together to survive. The cast also includes Stephen Lang (Korver), Trish Stratus (Gina), Danny Glover and Saul Rubinek; Vinnie Jones also appears.

The film had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on 26 September 2015. Netflix bought it and made it available worldwide from 14 July 2016.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

One building, armed mercenaries and two men who cannot stand each other: a straightforward, effective action recipe. The forced partnership between a former SWAT leader pushed to a desk after an injury and an arrogant movie star adds natural friction and humour between the fights. Attackers going after the evidence room also give the story a clear target and a sense of a countdown. Don't expect big surprises, but if you want a tense siege film, this is the right address.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Gridlocked stacks two old formulas: the buddy-cop template built on mismatched partners forced to cooperate, and the siege thriller set in a closed space. A single location is a smart choice for making the most of the budget, and Allan Ungar and Rob Robol's script tries to turn that limitation into an advantage. The problem is that the film has no ambition to go beyond the genre's expectations: the characters never move past familiar types, and the arc of the wounded hero and the spoiled star can be sensed within the first minutes. Reaching a wide audience through Netflix's purchase shows that lean, functional B-movies like this still have an audience, but there is little here for anyone looking for originality.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

It is about armed mercenaries storming a police station and a fight to survive against them. In a siege film like this, shooting and violence are at the heart of the story, so it is not suitable for children. Older teenagers who like action can watch it with an adult around. For a family evening, a calmer choice makes more sense.
