Knockin' on Heaven's Door

Directed by Thomas Jahn, who co-wrote the screenplay with Til Schweiger, the 1997 German tragicomedy Knockin' on Heaven's Door takes its title from the famous Bob Dylan song; the version heard in the film is performed by the German band Selig. Martin and Rudi meet in hospital and learn they both have incurable diseases. When Martin realizes that Rudi has never seen the sea, the two steal a roadster and set off on one final journey together.

Trouble follows when it turns out the car belongs to gangsters, with a million marks stashed in the trunk. Drawing more than three million cinemagoers, it became the most successful German film of 1997 and was entered into the 20th Moscow International Film Festival, where Schweiger won the Silver St. George for Best Actor. The cast also includes Moritz Bleibtreu, Jan Josef Liefers and Rutger Hauer.
