Füruzan — Biography

Born Parvin Kheyrbakhsh, Füruzan (Persian: فروزان) was one of the leading actresses of pre-revolutionary Iranian cinema, born in 1937 in Bandar-e Anzali. She began her career as a dubbing artist before appearing on screen in director Siamak Yasemi's 1963 film Sahel-e Entezar, and the same director's Ganj-e Gharoon (1965) turned her into a nationwide star.

Opposite her co-star in that film, Mohammad Ali Fardin, she formed one of the most iconic screen pairings of the so-called "Film Farsi" era, Iran's dominant popular cinema before the revolution, appearing in more than sixty films through the 1960s and 1970s. While working with directors such as Ali Hatami, Shapur Gharib and Fereydun Goleh, she also made her only contribution to the Iranian New Wave in Dariush Mehrjui's Dayereh-ye Mina.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution she was banned from further screen work, grew increasingly reclusive and rarely gave interviews. She died in Tehran on 24 January 2016; her death prompted numerous tributes across Persian-language media.
