Necdet Mahfi Ayral was one of the longest-lasting actors of Turkish theatre and Yeşilçam, remembered for a stage career of roughly seventy years. He created memorable characterisations in the company of the Istanbul City Theatres and left his mark in cinema and dubbing as well. Born in the Paşabahçe quarter of Beykoz, he left Galatasaray Sultanisi when his father died and the fees could not be paid, and began work in a bank's accounting department. He first appeared on stage on 24 September 1932 at the Darülbedayi in 7 Köyün Zeynebi. At the City Theatres he acted in Lüküs Hayat, Kral Lear, Deli Dolu, Cyrano de Bergerac and Tartuffe, and also staged children's plays. Between 1950 and 1975 he became famous as the Turkish voice of the Italian comedian Totò. In film, after Akasya Palas (1940), Akdeniz Korsanları and Soygun, he appeared in 1963 in the Istanbul shoots of Alain Robbe-Grillet's L'Immortelle and Elia Kazan's America America.

In the 1990s he reached a wide audience again with Eşkıya, Hamam and Mektup. In 1998 he received the Aziz Nesin Labour Award at the Ankara Film Festival.
