Selahattin Fırat — Biography

Selahattin Fırat was one of Yeşilçam's character actors, appearing in many productions on both film and television, his parts usually supporting ones that stayed in the memory. He is remembered above all for the classic comedies Kemal Sunal led in the early 1980s, and SinemaTürk lists 181 acting credits for him. He died on 3 June 2018 at the age of 88.

He worked mainly in the popular comedies of the 1980s: Atla Gel Şaban, Yedi Bela Hüsnü (as Suat), Kılıbık and Tokatçı (as Deli Sait) belong to this period. Outside comedy he also took roles in Güneşin Tutulduğu Gün (1983, as Muharrem) and Umut Sokağı (1986, as Topal Recep). In the 1990 Swiss-Turkish co-production Umuda Yolculuk (Journey of Hope) he played the grandfather, in a film that won an Academy Award. Around the same years he appeared in Madde 438, Kiraz Çiçek Açıyor (as Hacı Emmi) and Bir Kadın Düşmanı.

On television he appeared in Kurdoğlu (1991), Kalbimi Kıra Kıra (1997), Kırık Ayna (2003), Gizli Dünyalar (2004), İki Aile (2006) and the first season of Akasya Durağı (2008), and in cinema he was in Hemşo (2000) and Hüdayi Yolu (1993). His funeral was held at the Şişli Mosque and he was buried at Kavaklı Gürpınar Cemetery.

Their work through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Selahattin Fırat is the familiar face in the supporting cast of the neighbourhood comedies Kemal Sunal made with Natuk Baytan: Deli Sait in Tokatçı, Suat in Yedi Bela Hüsnü, Selahattin in Atla Gel Şaban. In these films the laughter comes from Sunal; Fırat's share, in my view, is to fill the naive hero's surroundings with people of the neighbourhood and the street. Part of the flavour of Yeşilçam comedy comes from such supporting faces.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The Selahattin Fırat films for the whole family are the Kemal Sunal comedies: Atla Gel Şaban, about a mafia that kidnaps a man who can predict horse races, and Milyarder, about the station master of a small town who wins the lottery. Kilink İstanbul'da is adapted from a violent Italian photo comic and is not for young children.
