Stupid Champion (Aptal Şampiyon) (translated)

Aptal Şampiyon ("Stupid Champion") is a 1975 Turkish comedy directed and produced by Hulki Saner for Saner Film. Saner wrote the screenplay with Adnan Saner, drawing on a work by Esen Püsküllü, with Rafet Şiriner behind the camera. Shot in colour, the film answers the martial-arts craze that swept cinema in the 1970s with the comic sensibility of Yeşilçam.

The plot revolves around a poor car-repair apprentice who is the spitting image of a world karate champion. Muttalip is a lazy, fun-loving young man forever being scolded by his master. An international fighting tournament is about to be held in Istanbul, and the former world champion, the Chinese fighter Wang-çu, is preparing to compete — until a man named Ti-wan threatens to kill him unless he withdraws. When the champion's entourage arrives in Istanbul anyway, his manager Pong spots Muttalip at a fighting school and, struck by the uncanny resemblance, schemes to pass the apprentice off as Wang-çu so the tournament can go ahead safely. Naturally, nothing goes according to plan.

Müjdat Gezen carries the film in the double role of Muttalip and Wang Çu. The cast also features Hülya Şengül as Nermin, Ülkü Özen as Kıskanç Lu, Şener Şen as Fong, plus Yavuz Selekman and Oktar Durukan.
