Carousel (Atlıkarınca) (translated)
Merry-Go-Round is a 2010 Turkish drama directed by İlksen Başarır, who co-wrote the script with lead actor Mert Fırat. It marks their second collaboration, coming after Başarır's acclaimed debut feature "Love in Another Language," and the film competed at the 47th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.
The plot follows Erdem, Sevil and their children Edip and Sevgi, whose quiet life in a small town changes once they relocate to Istanbul after Sevil's mother suffers a stroke. Edip has grown distant during a decade at boarding school, while Erdem still dreams of becoming a writer. Noticing her daughter's withdrawal and sudden shifts in behavior, Sevil begins probing what has been happening at home and uncovers a long-buried secret involving incest within the family. When Erdem dies in a car accident, the full truth comes out, leaving each relative to confront it entirely on their own.
Mert Fırat and Nergis Öztürk star in the leads, and the film took the Best Screenplay prize at the Golden Orange festival, with young actress Zeynep Oral receiving a special award of her own.
