Diaz – Don't Clean Up This Blood

Directed by Daniele Vicari, the 2012 Italian-French-Romanian drama Diaz – Don't Clean Up This Blood revisits the closing days of the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa. On the night of July 21–22, more than three hundred police officers raided the Armando Diaz school, where demonstrators were sheltering, beating activists and journalists, seriously injuring dozens and leaving one person in a coma. The film, written by Vicari and Laura Paolucci, reconstructs the assault from the perspectives of both the protesters and the police, drawing on court records and interviews with witnesses; the protracted trials against the officers slowed the project's development for years. The school was rebuilt in Bucharest for the shoot, with filming also taking place in Genoa and South Tyrol. Screened in the Panorama section of the 2012 Berlin Film Festival, it earned an audience award. The events depicted are often described as among the gravest human rights violations in postwar Europe.
