Tehran Taboo

Tehran Taboo is a 2017 German-Austrian co-produced animated drama film. The first feature-length directorial work of Ali Soozandeh, who also wrote the screenplay, the film was made using the rotoscoping technique; the actors were filmed against a green backdrop and backgrounds specific to Tehran were added through animation. Soozandeh has stated that he chose this method because it was not possible to shoot the film in Tehran. The original language of the production is Persian and its events take place in Tehran.

The film follows the stories of three women and a musician living in the city; the impasses the characters face in the light of strict religious rules and the double standards these produce are treated largely through the position of women in society and with adult themes. It was produced by Ali Samadi Ahadi and Antonin Svoboda for coop99, and the music was composed by Ali Aşkın. The cast includes Elmira Rafizadeh, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Arash Marandi and Negar Mona Alizadeh, as well as Hasan Ali Mete in the role of the judge.

The film was screened in the Critics' Week section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 and won the FIPRESCI Prize for best debut film at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Released in the United States in February 2018, the production received generally favourable reviews from critics.
