Engin Hepileri — Biography

Engin Hepileri is an actor and theatre director whose career runs from the stage to television and cinema. Wide audiences know him as Sinyor Seyfi in the military comedy Emret Komutanım, Oğuz in the youth series Kampüsistan and Hakan Eren in İntikam; in Yağmur: Kıyamet Çiçeği he played the singer Kâzım Koyuncu.

Born in Istanbul, Hepileri met the stage through State Theatres productions during his years at Cağaloğlu Anadolu Lisesi. He entered the Istanbul University State Conservatory in 1996 and worked as a research assistant there while doing his master's degree between 2002 and 2005. Joining Kent Oyuncuları in 1998, he played in about twenty of its productions, winning the Afife Theatre Awards' New Generation Special Award in 2004 for Inishmore'lu Yüzbaşı and the Sadri Alışık supporting-actor prize in theatre comedy in 2010 for Cimri. He turned to directing in 2008 with Israel Horovitz's Kuyruk and later taught at Academy Kenter and his university.

On screen he shared the Adana Golden Boll jury's collective performance award in 2011 with the cast of Celal Tan ve Ailesinin Aşırı Acıklı Hikâyesi, and in 2015 received the Sadri Alışık Ayhan Işık Special Award for Çalsın Sazlar and Yağmur: Kıyamet Çiçeği. More recent credits include Doğduğun Ev Kaderindir, Prestij Meselesi, ANKA and Zaferin Rengi, in which he plays Rauf Orbay. He presented a culture-arts programme on TRT Okul and hosted TRT 1's Altın Petek contest in 2016-2017. He is married to actress Beyza Şekerci.

Their work through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Engin Hepileri's screen path runs through youth series and situation comedy: Vural in Yedi Numara, Oğuz in Kampüsistan, Sergeant Seyfi Sarsılmaz in Emret Komutanım. In all three the story moves as a group gets used to each other, so Hepileri's work is measured in ensemble chemistry. In my view Emret Komutanım is the clearest example of this line: a crowded cast that holds funny and touching scenes together in the barracks.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Engin Hepileri's cinema is best approached through ensemble films: the Boss of Asiye in Yavuz Turgul's Av Mevsimi, the Deputy Inspector in Onur Ünlü's Celal Tan ve Ailesinin Aşırı Acıklı Hikayesi, Barba in Nesli Çölgeçen's Çalsın Sazlar. Three directors, three different worlds. In my view Hepileri's manner in cinema is not to impose his own voice but to fit each director's world.
