Halide Pişkin — Biography

Turkish stage, radio and film actress Halide Pişkin is regarded as one of the first women theatre actors of the Republican era. On radio sketches she created "Pişkin Teyze", a sensible, witty, outspoken older woman who won a devoted audience, and she brought similar character types to the stage and the screen. She spent her final years with the Istanbul City Theatres and died on 1 November 1959, aged 57.

She began acting in 1923 on the Izmir tour of the Millî Sahne company founded by Şadi Fikret. She started with young women's parts, but after taking over an old woman's role she moved into character acting for good. When the company broke up she joined Darülbedayi in 1925, and later worked with the companies of Raşit Rıza, Naşit Özcan and Sadi Tek and at Ses Tiyatrosu. In 1943 she co-founded her own troupe with İhsan Balkır, and in 1951 she returned to the City Theatres, where she stayed until her death.

She entered film in 1933 with Karım Beni Aldatırsa. She played character parts in many films, among them Kılıbıklar and Karanlık Yollar (1947), Lüküs Hayat (1950), İncili Çavuş (1951), Annemi Arıyorum (1959) and Kalpaklılar, and in 1958 she also wrote the screenplay of Kızımın Başına Gelenler. Some sources give her birth year as 1906, 1907 or 1910, but 1902 is accepted on the strength of interviews from her own time. She was born in Shkodër and was buried at Feriköy Cemetery.
