On Board (Gemide)

Gemide (On Board) is a 1998 Turkish drama directed by Serdar Akar, who co-wrote the script with Önder Çakar. Uğur Yücel composed the score, and the production came from Yeni Sinemacılık. The film shares several characters with "A Madonna in Laleli," a picture shot around the same time whose storyline runs parallel to this one.

The plot centers on the four-man crew of a sand barge. After one of them claims his money has been stolen, the captain, played by Erkan Can, leads the men ashore, where they attack a group of people and drag a woman back onto the ship. What follows pulls the four sailors into an ever darker spiral of violence and guilt.

Alongside Erkan Can as the captain, the cast includes Naci Taşdöğen, Yıldıray Şahinler, Haldun Boysan, Güven Kıraç and Cengiz Küçükayvaz. The film picked up several prizes at festivals in Ankara and Antalya, including the Golden Orange for second-best film.
